The Virginia Dixie Boys State 13-14 year old tournament will get underway this weekend in South Boston at the Mason Day Sports Complex, and Pulaski County will be sending a team with high hopes of finishing well.
The team, coached by Wayne Hall, is made up of players from two Pulaski County teams. During the regular season they completed against teams from Radford, Christiansburg, Giles, and Carroll County.
The Cougars punched their ticket to the big show this past weekend when they competed in the West Regionals. The weekend started with a 6-1 win over Grayson County. A 2-6 loss to Galax in the second round put the Cougars in jeopardy, but a convincing 13-5 win over Franklin advanced them to the championship game. Unfortunately for Pulaski, that game was against Galax, and while the Cougars did double their run output from the first matchup, Galax still got the 4-8 win.
With the win, Galax will represent the West Region as the top seed, with Pulaski competing as the Regional runners-up.
While moving on to the State level of competition may be a new experience for some of the players, at least five of the players have been to the big show before. Jaden Frazier, Jordan Lytton, Trent Blankenship, Nathaniel Remington, and Zach Barker …. the younger members of the team …. are making their third trip to the State tournament.
The Cougars, pictured here, are made up of (front row, left to right) Trent Blankenship, Jordan Lytton, James Sutherland, Tyler Waddell, Dylan Danner, and Jake Turpin. Second row: Tyler Vaughan, Zach Barker, Kameron Hall, Jaden Frazier, Nathaniel Remington, and Zakk Jones. Back row: Coach’s Wayne Hall, Joe Blankenship, and Tim Jones.
