County fairs have their roots in agriculture, so in keeping with that heritage, New River Valley Fair will recognize a “Farmer of the Year” at this year’s event.
The fair runs July 22-27 at the New River Valley Fairgrounds on Route 100 north of Dublin. However, the deadline to submit a nomination for Farmer of the Year is quickly approaching (July 10).
The winner will receive $500, sponsored by Farm Credit of the Virginias. Applications can be obtained at the New River Valley Fair office (674-1548), by email: firstname.lastname@example.org, or by visiting www.nrvfair.com. Applications must be postmarked or faxed by Wednesday, July 10, for the nomination to be considered.
Applications should be mailed to New River Valley Fair, NRV Fair Farmer of the Year, P. O. Box 595, Newbern, VA 24126, or faxed to 674-0516.
Farmers from all areas of agriculture are eligible for nomination, but they must be at least 30 years old; earn at least two-thirds of their income from farming; should be the principal decision-maker in the operation; and must live and farm in the counties of Montgomery, Pulaski, Floyd, Giles, Wythe, Carroll, or Grayson.
The nominee is also required to attend the award ceremony Tuesday, July 23, at the fairgrounds. The winner will be announced in the Bud Walsh Arena (grandstands) just prior to the 7 p.m. Horse Pull event.
