Readers of a magazine that serves the nation’s southeastern states have given high marks to Pulaski County and New River Valley in terms of activities, attractions and more.

In a “Best of the Mountains” survey conducted every five years by Blue Ridge Country magazine, readers in nine states were asked to “weigh in on their favorite things, places, activities and more.”

The results of the survey, which apparently garnered a record number of votes this year, showed high favor for several attractions and services located solely in Pulaski County or shared with other parts of the New River Valley.

According to the survey findings, the New River was selected as the Best Canoeing River and Best Fishing Lake or River, while Claytor Lake came in second for Best Campground and for Favorite State Park. The New River Trail also was a favorite among readers. It came in second for Best Biking Trail and Best Rail to Trail System.

Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech, located in Fairlawn, was selected as the second Best Golf Course and Draper Mercantile in Draper came in third for Best Country Store.

Meanwhile, those looking to further their education may want to check out New River Community College as it was selected as the Best Continuing Education Opportunity.

Best Real Estate Company went to Long & Foster of the New River Valley.

Pearisburg, Floyd, Pembroke and Blacksburg attractions and businesses also placed in the reader survey. The complete list of survey winners is published in the current edition of Blue Ridge Country magazine.

Although the magazine is published in Roanoke, it serves Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia.
