Plenty of events along The Crooked Road

Bluegrass musicians and music lovers will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy themselves in the coming months. The Crooked Road and its affiliates have the following special and regular events on offer for those who like to roam:

The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance will have a free show featuring Woody Pines at 6:30 p.m. and Paul Birch at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 7. Children’s activities will start around 6 p.m.; the event overall will end around 10 p.m. The Birthplace of Country Music is located at 416 State Street, Bristol, TN. The Blue Ridge Music Center will have a show on Saturday, June 8 called “Mountain Duets” featuring the South Carolina Broadcasters, Eddie & Bonnie Bond and Mac & Jenny Traynham. Event starts at 7 p.m.; tickets are $10, children 12 and under admitted free. The Blue Ridge Music Center is located at 700 Foothills Road in Galax. The Clinch Mountain Music Fest will be held on Saturday, June 8, featuring Audie Blaylock and Redline; admission is $15.The Carter Family fold is located at 3449 A.P. Carter Highway in Hiltons, VA. For more information call (276) 645-0035.

The Country Cabin features entertainment every Saturday night from 7:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m. with live bands, bluegrass and old time music, flatfooting, two stepping, clogging, cake walks and broom dances, admission free. There will be a “Bluegrass Circle” on Saturday, June 1 and a show by Will Caudill and Route 7 on Saturday, June 8. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and music starts at 7:30 p.m. The Country Cabin is located at 6034 Kent Junction Road in Norton, VA.

The Rex Theater always features $5 shows that start at 8 p.m. and run until 10 p.m. (but you can leave your jacket on your seat when the doors open at 6:30 p.m. before grabbing a bite to eat in town). Saturday, June 8 will have the New Ballards Branch Bogtrotters. As always, tickets are sold only at the door on the night of each show. The Rex Theater is located at 113 E. The Floyd Country Store features music each Friday night of the year (barring major holidays) starting officially at 7 p.m. and running until almost 11 p.m. Officially called the Friday Night Jamboree, admission is $5 and features three bands; in warmer weather, there’s usually plenty of free sidewalk jamming to enjoy along the street outside. The store also features Americana Afternoons starting at noon on Saturdays and segues into the Americana Open Mic at 1:30 p.m. Each Sunday features both a Beginner Jam and an Old Time Jam at 2 p.m. For information about each week’s bands as well as special shows, call (540) 745-4563 or visit   www.floydcountrystore.com.

 

The Heartwood: Southwest Virginia’s Artisan Gateway has live music every Thursday night from 6 p.m.–9 p.m. and features crafts, memorabilia and musical instruments for sale as well as food and a wine and coffee bar.
