Harrisonburg- For the final time, Ian Calfee donned the cardinal and gold of Pulaski County High School last weekend at the 2013 Virginia State Track & Field Championships. The gentle giant
claimed the title of “All-State” as he threw the shot put 51’ 8 ¼” to capture fifth place and break the PCHS outdoor shot put record. His throw was a ten foot improvement over last year’s performance at the state meet and a personal best by 3 ¼”. Ian’s outdoor All-State award comes on the heels of earning All-State in the 2013 indoor season. Calfee also placed 20th in the discus (130’ 10”) against a very tough field.
The 3200 meter relay team of Damon Akers, Daegan Friend, Cole Turman and Chris Taylor placed 19th in the state championship (8:46). “The boys ran well,” said Head Coach Jamie McCarty. “It was an eye-opener for them and their taste of the best competition in the state. Daegan and Cole were splitting their time between soccer and track during the spring while Chris Taylor had been nursing an ailing hip for the past two weeks and only running on competition days.”
Brunswick High won the 2013 Virginia Outdoor Track & Field Championships with 68 points. Blacksburg was runner-up with 44 points followed by Loudon County (43), Caroline (37) and Brookville (36). Christiansburg finished 14th (17 ½ points) while Pulaski County tied for 35th with Salem High (4 points).
