CARROLL COUNTY – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is increasing the speed limit on the Route 58 Bypass around Hillsville this month after engineering studies determined the bypass meets requirements for the higher speed.
New 65 miles per hour signs are expected to replace the old 55 miles per hour signs by Monday, May 6, weather permitting. According to VDOT, the change in speed limit affects about 3.4 miles of the bypass between its western interchange with 58 Business and .9 miles west of Freemont Road (Route 820).
VDOT examined road alignment, interchange spacing, design speed and crash history to determine whether the higher speed was acceptable.
VDOT coordinated with the Virginia State Police and Carroll County officials before the speed limit change was finalized.
