Special Olympians Earn Varsity Letter

Dublin- The members, families and friends of Pulaski County Special Olympics gathered Thursday evening in the Pulaski County High School Commons to celebrate their accomplishments of the 2012-2013 school year. Following a lovely meal of roast beef, fried chicken and all the fixings, the crowd settled down for a 16 minute highlight video accompanied by motivational music. There were lots of cheers and laughs as they reviewed their accomplishments. The awards ceremony was very special and a few individuals were awarded a varsity letter for a letterman’s jacket. Pulaski County High School is the only school in the state of Virginia to award a Special Olympian high school student-athlete such an award.

A certificate of achievement was awarded to each Special Olympian by coordinator/special education teacher George Marunich that evening along with the following awards:

Lee Gallimore- “Dead Eye Shooter” Award, Certificate of Achievement

Missy Kimbler- “Best Morning Smiles & High Five” Award, Certificate of Achievement

Michala Bishop- “Team Jessica” Award, Certificate of Achievement

Dora Nichols- “Sweetheart” Award, Certificate of Achievement

Kalyn Akers- “Rookie Coach-of-the-Year” Award

James “Jimbo” Hylton- “Statemans” Award (5 or more years of service and a team leader), Certificate of Achievement

Jason “Walleye” Wall- “Statemans” Award (5 or more years of service and a team leader), Certificate of Achievement

Chris Perkins- Certificate of Achievement

Zach Hagee- “Greatest Torch Bearer Ever” Award, Certificate of Achievement, Photo of Virginia Tech Superstar Eric Green posing with Zach

Jessica Jones- “Teacher of the Year” Award (for working with the daycare children), Certificate of Achievement

Kathy Davis- “Don’t Stop Me Now” Award, “World’s Best Retired Teacher” Award, Certificate of Achievement

Ashley Reed- “High Five” Award, Certificate of Achievement

Dean Burton- “World’s Best Switch-A-Roo” Award, Statesman (5 or more years of service and a team leader), Certificate of Achievement

Wayne Jones- “Old Man Ironman” Award (toughness, strength and effort), Statesman (5 years or more of service and a team leader, Pulaski High School Varsity Letter, Certificate of Achievement

Ronda Johnston- “Special Advocate” Award, “Polar Plunge Leader” Award

Jack and Louise Wade were recognized at the banquet. Jack coached Special Olympics for Pulaski County from 1991-2012, retired as a professor at the New River Community College, survived a bout of cancer and is a former collegiate scholarship football player for the University of Utah. His wife, Louise, wrote “Melody’s Life,” an inspirational story of a family’s determination that neither cerebral palsy nor mental retardation would silence their daughter’s song. Louise overcame polio in the 1950’s to become a wife, mother, graduate student at University of Virginia, teacher, consultant and a professor. The Wade family has been a strong advocate for Special Olympics throughout the years.
