A six-year-old male child died Tuesday morning after a “shelf-type structure” fell on top of him at a day care center in Dublin, authorities said.
Pulaski County Sheriff Jim Davis said the child, a student at Pulaski Elementary School, attended the day care facility prior to the start of the school day. He said the child, who was not identified, was transported to LewisGale Hospital-Pulaski shortly after 8 Tuesday morning and he was pronounced dead just after 9.
Davis did not identify the day care center, but an ambulance was dispatched to Busy B’s Day Care Center on Route 11 Tuesday morning for a child injured by a falling shelf. Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the emergency call along with the ambulance.
Davis said an investigation into the incident is continuing.
Tom Brewster, Pulaski County Public Schools superintendent, said counselors from New River Community Services and the school psychologist met with Pulaski Elementary School teachers after learning of the child’s death. “We tried to keep as much routine as we could today,” he said Tuesday afternoon.
While many students may not have been aware of the death Tuesday, he said parents of PES students were notified of the incident in case they needed to provide support for their child at home. The child was not identified in the notice sent to parents.
Counselors also are on campus tomorrow (Wednesday) to assist anyone in need of their services.
