RADFORD—The City of Radford has issued a warning to residents concerning rising water in the New River due to recent heavy rains. Public recreation trails and New River Drive, which runs through Bisset Park, have been closed.

According to a press release, “New River Drive and the Riverway (bikeway/walkway) have been closed due to flooding from storm ‘Achilles.’ Claytor Lake Dam was opened last night. The New River is expected to crest at about 13 feet around 8:00 tonight.”

The release said park facilities have been readied and Radford may experience some localized flooded streets and properties. “Crews are ready to deal with issues, should they arise. Citizens are reminded that floodwaters are dangerous and to avoid areas where flood waters are present,” the release continued.

Local forecasts show chances of rain in the area through Saturday.

UPDATE: According to further information from the City of Radford, Bisset Park has now also been closed until further notice.
