For 18 years, the Dublin-Radford Ruritan Club has put up a flag display at the Radford end of Memorial Bridge to honor veterans over Memorial Day weekend. This year the group will work with other area Ruritan clubs, add other sites and are seeking sponsors.
For the first time, the Ruritan Club will plant flags at Dublin Town Hall and at the entrance of the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery, with the help of the Draper Ruritan Club and the Ruritan Road Ruritan Club, which has purchased 100 flags for the cemetery display, in addition to the 100 flags the Dublin-Radford group has bought for the Memorial Bridge display.
These displays are a fundraiser for the club’s scholarship and outreach program for needy families. Sponsorship will cover all three areas. The Ruritans ask for sponsorships from businesses and individuals in the area and sponsorship is open to all.
The cost for flags is $5 for an individual and $10 for a business; flags can be in honor of family members, friends or military veterans. Proceeds will go towards the Ruritan Club’s fund for a $300 scholarship for a student in need.
Sponsors should make checks payable to Dublin-Radford Ruritan Club and mail to P.O. Box 1668 Dublin, VA 24084 and respond by Saturday, May 25.
The Dublin-Radford Ruritan Club will also hold a Memorial Day service at Bisset Park in Radford on Monday, May 27 at 11 a.m. Programs and flags will be handed out before the service.
