Bakers from Pulaski County and Galax recently took home the “bread” in Southwest Virginia Fresh’s (SO Fresh) Blossom & Grow Fest baked goods contest in Draper.

Sandy Brunner and Debbie Grubb, both from Pulaski County, won in the cake and cookie categories while Smadar Chaffee of Galax won in the Yeast Breads competition. Each winner received a $20 grocery gift card from SO Fresh.

Festival visitors, who sampled each entry and then voted on their favorite in each category, judged the entries. The contest is a tradition of the annual Blossom & Grow Fest, which also featured “storybooth” exhibits by area food producers. The exhibits give food producers an opportunity to meet area consumers and market their goods.

Meanwhile, a learning center allowed children to plant seeds and win prizes by answering food production questions.

SO Fresh is an all-volunteer organization promoting a local foods economy throughout southwestern Virginia.
