A pickup truck caught fire and crashed into an unused apartment building off Highland Road in Dublin Tuesday morning, setting the building on fire too.
Captain J.B. Saunders with Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office said the driver of the truck, Richard W. Kent of Dublin, told police he was driving along Highland Road around 10 a.m. when his 1993 Dodge pickup truck caught fire. Kent said he tried to pull off the road, but he lost control of the truck and it ran down a hill into the unoccupied apartment building at 6415 McGlothlin Lane.
Kent jumped out of the truck before it hit the building, according to Saunders. Kent, who refused medical treatment, was charged with reckless driving.
Saunders said Dublin, Newbern and Twin Community fire departments responded to the scene. When the first units arrived, they found the fire had already spread to the structure.
Dublin Fire Chief Ronnie McClure estimated damage to the apartment building and furniture being stored there at a total of $15,000. He said the owner indicated one apartment had been empty for about a year and the other one was vacated the first of this year.
The wreck is being investigated by Deputy C.M. McKnight with Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office.
