MONTGOMERY COUNTY – An attempt to serve felony drug warrants on a suspect turned deadly for the suspect in Montgomery County Wednesday when gunfire erupted.

According to Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Brian Wright, an initial investigation determined officers were attempting to serve warrants on a male suspect in the Ridgeway Drive area of the county when the suspect allegedly produced a gun and fired shots at police.

“Gunshots were exchanged and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene,” Wright said in a press release. None of the officers, who were from the sheriff’s office and Christiansburg Police Department, was injured.

Wright said the name of the suspect is not yet being released.

As is standard practice with shootings involving deputies or police officers, Virginia State Police has been called in to investigate the 3:15 p.m. shooting.
