Dublin – On a pretty afternoon for baseball the Cougars won their fifth straight game of the season by drubbing the George Wythe Maroons 12-2. Pulaski got a two run homer from Brayden Morris, and a big two run double from Brandon Huff to break a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third.
The Maroons would answer with two in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from Cade Holliday and a bases loaded walk by Josh Crigger.
Pulaski produced five more runs in the fifth inning. Tyler Blevins was hit by a pitch, and Morris tripled off the left centerfield fence to put the Cougars up 5-0. Tyler Dotson doubled in Morris, and fter Huff reached base JD Sutphin hit a scorcher off the fence to knock in both Dotson and Huff. Jake Tabor plated the last run of the uprising hitting a double to score Sutphin.
The Cougars would end the game with three more runs in the sixth. Matt Melton hit a single to score Blevins, and Huff knocked in Dustin Dishon. Tabor would draw a bases loaded walk to score Huff for the 10-run rule game finisher. Morris had three RBI’s, as did Huff. Sutphin and Tabor also plated two each. Melton and Dotson had the other runs batted in.
Tabor started on the mound for the Cougars, going two innings and giving up just two hits while striking out one. Southpaw Cody Brown came into the game in the third and earned the victory, as he went the last four innings striking out two, and giving up only two runs.
“It was a very good win for us,” said Cougar Head Coach Doug Dunavant. “We got good defensive play and some very timely hitting. I thought Tabor (Jake) did a fine job for us starting on the mound. Brown (Cody) did an excellent job on the hill. He wants the ball and as coaches we like that. On the offensive side of things Morris, Huff, Sutphin, Dotson and Blevins hit the ball well for us. Berkley Meredith, Daniel Safewright and Jed Singleton all made big defensive plays. It was a truly team effort. I like how Matt Melton hit the ball in the sixth inning. He’s had some injury problems but he hit like he was Melton from last year. It was ood to see that.”
The Cougars head back into action when they take on Galax Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Cougar Field.
