GILES COUNTY – A Roanoke man died Saturday when the car in which he was a passenger ran off Route 42 in Giles County and struck a tree.

William J. Baublitz, 67, of Roanoke died at the scene of the 4:16 p.m. wreck, less than a mile east or Route 703. Virginia State Police said neither Baublitz nor the driver of the vehicle, Anthony L. Garrett Jr., was wearing seatbelts.

According to police, Garrett, 40, of Buchanan was driving eastbound in a 1990 Mazda 626 when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road, striking the tree.

Garrett was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment of what police said were life-threatening injuries. He was listed in good condition Monday.

An investigation into the wreck is continuing. State Police said charges are pending.
