Galax -The Pulaski County Cougar baseball team traveled to Galax to open up the season and had to hold on to win 10-8. The Cougars scored eight runs in the first inning, but a huge run batted in the top of the seventh helped seal the deal.
Galax, after giving up those eight early runs, came back with three runs in their half of the first on two home runs. Brandon Huff, the Cougar starting southpaw senior pitcher, would eventually settle down to end the Maroon Tide uprising.
The Cougars made it 9-3 in the third. Berkley Meredith singled to start things off, and then Tyler Blevins was hit by a pitch. Brayden Morris then hit an RBI single to score Meredith.
Maroon Tide cut the score to 9-6 in the bottom of the fifth. Nick Davis doubled in two runs, and then Caleb Pack would drive him in. Galax would cut it to 9-8 in the sixth on a Stu Merdian double before Cougar hurler Logan Alley would strike out the side.
The top the seventh started when Cougars Dustin Dishon drew a lead-off walk. Jake Tabor hit into a fielders choice for the second out of the inning, and Alley drew a walk to put two on base. Blevins then strolled to the plate an stroked a big two out double to score Tabor to move the score to 10-8.
Blevins went three-for-three at the plate with three RBI’s, one run scored, a walk, and was hit by a pitch. Morris, Huff, and Jed Singleton knocked in two runs each. Brandon Huff was the starting and winning pitcher, and Logan Alley got the save as he went 2.2 innings striking out six batters.
Davis and Logan Brown had two RBI’s each for Galax (1-1), and Davis was tagged with the loss.
The Cougars are scheduled to play at Grayson County today and host Northside Friday in their home opener . Both games are scheduled for 5 p.m. starts.
