Dublin hires new police officer

Matt Abate and Lambert-web

A Wythe County native has joined Dublin Police Department as a patrol officer.

Matt Abate (pronounced like Abbott), 21, is a December graduate of New River Valley Criminal Justice Training Academy at Dublin. He graduated from Wytheville Community College’s Police Science program in May and also is a 2009 graduate of George Wythe High School.

Although Abate is one of four officers assigned to the patrol division, Lt. Dennis Lambert said officers in the small department “wear all kinds of hats. Sometimes the investigators and I will double as patrol officers. We do whatever is needed,” he said.

There is no requirement that officers live in Dublin, so Lambert said Abate will continue to live in Wythe County.

Congratulations to Matt. I have known Matt for a few years and he is a quality individual. He will be a fine addition to the Police Force. Good luck.
