WISE – Police say a lockdown on the campus of UVA-Wise in Wise County Wednesday night was the result of a student hoax.
According to Corinne Geller, a spokeswoman for Virginia State Police, a UVA-Wise student called 911 just before 9 p.m. to report that he had seen a man armed with a gun on campus. Authorities from UVA-Wise Police Department, Wise and Pound police departments, Wise County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police responded to the campus and started a building-to-building search.
As authorities were searching buildings, special agents from the Wytheville office of Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation conducted an interview with the student who made the report. The student subsequently confessed that the report was a hoax.
At that point, the lockdown was lifted and police cleared the campus.
Geller said the investigation is continuing.
