Tax Dept. calls are a scam

Pulaski County’s commissioner of the revenue warns residents to “hang up” if they receive what appears to be an automated telephone call from the Virginia Department of Taxation.

Trina Rupe said her office has been made aware that some taxpayers have received automated calls that claim to be from the Department of Taxation and are telling the recipient  “their Way2Go prepaid MasterCard has been locked for security reasons and to press 1 to unlock it.”

Rupe said the calls are a scam designed to collect personal identification information. She stressed that Virginia Department of Taxation never uses automated calling and never solicits personal information in that manner.

Anyone who receives one of these calls should just hang up, she advises. Questions should be directed to the taxation department at (804) 367-8031.
