Lewis Conard Kester Sr. 93, passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, following a short illness.
Born in Salisbury, N.C. Nov. 7, 1919, he is survived by his daughter, Norleen Kester Pomerantz of Radford; his son, Lewis Conard Kester Jr. of Richardson Texas; two granddaughters, Tamara Pomerantz of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and Kirsten Pomerantz Wallace of Tampa, Fla.; and two great-grandchildren, Luke and Avery Wallace, also of Tampa.
He was predeceased by his wife of nearly 68 years, Carrie Hebert Kestrel, and his two sisters, Theresa Eagle and Gracie Swicegood.
Mr. Kester joined the United States Army Nov. 14, 1941, and served until Dec. 29, 1945. While in the Army, he met his wife who was also serving in the Army. Both were stationed at Newport News. He was among the initial employees hired to open the Salisbury Veterans Administration Hospital in Salisbury, N.C., in 1953. He also drove a city bus in Salisbury.
Visitation was held at Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury, Thursday, Jan. 24, and the funeral service followed. Burial was at Rowan Memorial Park.
Mr. Kester was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and a great-grandfather who will be greatly missed.
