RADFORD – John Phillip Colby, 68, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at his home in Radford.
He was born Oct. 15, 1944 in Atlanta, the son of the late John Byron and Melody Keith Colby. He grew up with his sister, Sidney Lynne Colby, in the Houston, Texas area, graduating from Memorial High School in Spring Branch, Texas, and studying mechanical engineering at Sam Houston College and later at the University of Texas.
In 1964, he married his former wife, Candice G. Colby, and they raised three children, John Christopher (1965), Tracy Lynne Colby (1968) and Craig Byron (1977). He was an active church member at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas, under the leadership of Father Charles Hood. He had a lifelong career in pipeline industrial sales and over the years was employed by NASA, Bettis, EMI, M.O.V., Rotork, and owned his private company, Progressive Controls Inc. He was an avid bird and deer hunter and sports gun enthusiast.
He returned to the Atlanta area in 1984 and spent the last eight years in Radford, where he attended both Grove Methodist and Grace Episcopal churches. While in Radford, he took great joy in helping others and socializing with friends in the community.
He is survived by his oldest son, John Christopher; his wife, Carol, and their sons, John Randolph and Dean Allan; his younger son, Craig Byron; his wife, Alicia, and their son, Noah, and daughter, Macy; and his daughter, Tracy Lynne.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, 5 p.m., at Grace Episcopal Church, 210 Fourth St., Radford, VA 24141. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, 210 4th St., Radford, VA 24141 or Grove United Methodist Church, 1020 Tyler Ave., Radford, VA 24141.
