Alvin William ‘Poppy’ Dillard Sr.

BLUEFIELD, Va. – Alvin William “Poppy” Dillard Sr., 79, of Bailey Switch, Bluefield, Va., died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at Bluefield Regional Medical Center. 

He was born in Gratton, and was a son of the late Alvin Henry Dillard and Ruby Jones Dillard. Mr. Dillard was a former driver for Smith Transfer Co. and retired from Yellow Transfer Co. He attended Calvary Baptist Chapel Church in Wittens Mill.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Dolly Abel Dillard and by a sister, Juanita Sluss.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Sue McPeak Dillard; sons, Alvin W. Dillard Jr. and wife, Elaine, of Wytheville, and Ronnie Dillard and wife, Shirley, of Tazewell; daughter, Sandy Rowlett, of Bluefield, Va.; step-daughter, Carol Isaacs, of Pulaski; half-brother, Bobby Bales, of Frederick, Md.; half-sisters, Hazel Lazarda, of Charlotte, N.C., and Pat Harris, of Honaker; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 10, 11 a.m., at Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, Va., with Brother Chuck Trent officiating. Burial will follow in the Grandview Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Jeff Thompson, James Hubbard, Josh Dillard and other family and friends. Friends may visit will family today, Wednesday, Jan. 9, from 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home.

 

Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, Va., is serving the Dillard family.
