Pulaski wrestlers perform well at tourney

Wytheville-Seven students from Pulaski County traveled Saturday to compete in the 2012 Maroon Wrestling Challenge at George Wythe High School. Pulaski Elementary second grader Evan Alger and fourth grader Addisen Lawson competed along with Dublin Elementary’s second grader Nicholas Golden. All three are members of the Cougar Crush, a wrestling club coached by Bobby Alger. Alger is also a volunteer assistant coach for the Pulaski County Middle School Wrestling Team.

Evan Alger won gold as he defeated Chandler Warley (2:37 pin), Garret Warley (42 second pin) and Tanner Compton (9-6 decision). Addisen Lawson won gold as he defeated Alex Vaught (2:59 pin), Blane Sage (33 second pin) and Conner Manuel (2:48 pin). Nicholas Golden won silver as he lost his first match against Logan Arnold in a 6-0 decision, but returned to defeat Justin Martin in a 6-2 decision. Golden finished the day with an impressive 11 second pin against Lynn Ramsey.

Seventh graders DJ Gathers and Brody Fields represented Dublin Middle School at the Maroon Tournament while Pulaski Middle School eighth graders Jacob Algers and Cherokee Widner also competed Saturday as Pulaski County Middle School Assistant Wrestling Coach JP Widner help guided the grapplers. Alger competed well as he handled Hunter Robbins easily in a 14-2 decision. He pinned Cody Kirk (45 seconds) and Justin Frye (1:45) to earn the gold medal in the 110-120 lb category. First year wrestler Cherokee Widner won gold in the 120-130 lb catergory by pinning Josh Devine in 25 seconds and Jordan Guinn in 2:28. Brody Fields lost his first two matches to Austin Wolford (pin 2:53) and Ethan Martin (20 seconds). Fields redeemed himself by pinning Phillip Cornett in 43 seconds to earn a bronze medal in the 160 lb category. DJ Gathers also received a bronze medal in the 170 lb category as he lost to Ethan Martin (pin 2:43) and Jason Jonas (pin 1:14) in tough matches.

Next Saturday, members of the Cougar Crush and the Pulaski County Middle School Team will compete in the Mountain Empire K-8 Junior Championships at Rural Retreat High School. Wrestling will begin at 10 a.m.
