ST. CHARLES – Virginia State Police are investigating an overnight train derailment in Lee County that killed the driver of a vehicle parked next to the railroad tracks.
According to State Police, a CSX train loaded with coal derailed onto a 2003 Ford Windstar in St. Charles around 11:45 p.m. Sunday. The driver was killed and his passenger was seriously injured when part of the train landed on the vehicle.
Police said the minivan, owned by J&K Transportation, was parked in a gravel lot adjacent to the tracks. The van shuttles railroad employees between destinations.
The driver, identified as Jamie Collins, 31, of Baxter, Ky., was transported to Lee Regional Medical Center, where he died Monday morning, according to State Police. The passenger, Jason H. Williams, 33, of Viper, Ky., suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
The investigation continues.
Lee County is in far Southwest Virginia, on the Kentucky border.
