The Pulaski County Cougars scored only 15 second half points Wednesday as they lost to undefeated Carroll County 70-40.
The Cavaliers (4-0) outscored the Cougars 39-15 in the half and placed three players into double figures. Another just missed that mark. Ryan Gravely paced the Cavaliers with 14 points. Austin Horton (6’4″) scored 13 points and Connor Lundy added 11 points. Lundy scored all of those in the third quarter.
Pulaski County (2-4) played perhaps their best first half of the season so far, and were only down 31-25 at the break. Coach Hanks remarked, “we didn’t have good transition defense in that third quarter, and they controlled the game.”
No Cougars hit double digits, with Zack Akers leading them in scoring with nine. Marcus Johnston had eight points and two steals. Cameron Merchant finished with seven points. Lonnie Mattox had four points and seven rebounds, but spent much of the game in foul trouble. Tyler Dotson and Marcus Burks both contributed five points each. Malik Eaves had two points and three steals.
Coach Hanks said, “They (Carroll County) made and make a lot of good basketball plays. They are a very, very good team. Gravley (Ryan) does lots of good things for them. He’s real good player and he controlled the game for them. Our second half transition defense was nonexistent. We didn’t play with any confidence.”
The Cougars finished 13 of 44 from the floor for just 29.5%. They hit just 2 of 9 from behind the arc.
The Cougar junior varsity improved to 4-2 with a 59-48 victory over the Cavaliers. Hesus Hickman led all scorers with 17 points, and Elliott Brewster chipped in with 14. The Cavaliers were led by Alan Boler’s 12 points.
The schedule doesn’t get any easier for Pulaski, as they will now face Radford again Friday night. JV action begins at 5:30 and varsity at 7:00 p.m.
