Mrs. Barbara Lee Brown Bowles, 86, of Draper, died Tuesday evening, Dec. 11, 2012 at her home. Mrs. Bowles was born Nov. 22, 1926 in Wichita Falls, Texas and was the daughter of the late Dewey Lee and Cecelia O’Grady Brown. Her husband was Dr. Frank L. Bowles.
Mrs. Bowles graduated from Columbia University in New York City with a B.S. in Psychology in 1949. She received her Masters Degree from the University of Florida, Gainsville in 1961 and did post-graduate work to become certified as a school psychologist from the University of Texas, Austin, in 1968. Mrs. Bowles taught in public schools in Virginia, Florida and Texas prior to returning to Virginia to become the first School Psychologist for Pulaski County. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Pulaski; the Hoe and Hope Garden Club for over 30 years; a 12-year board member of the Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley; several bridge clubs and the Thornspring Country Club.
Mrs. Bowles is survived by her son Mac Bowles, his wife, Molly, and grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Jason Bowles; daughters, Kathy and Karen Bowles; sister, Peggy Sisserson; two brothers, Dallas Brown and Frank Brown and wife, Pam, and brother-in-law, John Bowles and wife, Sandy.
Special thanks go to Lisa Taylor of Draper for the care she provided to Mrs. Bowles in her home and for her friendship, which was of great comfort.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Black Lick Cemetery, Rural Retreat, with the Rev. Edward Schaack officiating.
