PCHS guidance counselor arrested

Accused of embezzling more than $50,000 from cheerleading program

By MELINDA WILLIAMS
melinda@southwesttimes.co

Pulaski County High School Guidance Counselor Angelia Paige Harrell was arrested Monday evening on three felony counts of embezzlement, according to police.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Michael Conroy said Harrell was served with the three indictments and voluntarily surrendered herself to authorities. She was released on bond.

According to Conroy, Harrell is alleged to have diverted funds from Pulaski County School System, but more specifically from funds set aside for the cheerleading program. Harrell was a head coach of the varsity cheerleading squad.

The code section under which Harrell is charged deals with the diversion of public funds by a public employee. The charges are Class 4 felonies, each of which carries a possible sentence of two to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $100,000.

The alleged embezzlements occurred between March 2010 and Oct. 2011, said Conroy.

Pulaski County Schools Superintendent Tom Brewster declined to comment on the situation Monday or on the status of Harrell’s employment due to it being a personnel matter.

Every criminal has their day in court and this one will too, however I feel certain that she would not have been arrested had there not been enough evidence to do so. I feel sorry for the girls who got cheated out of things they paid for and the ones that got tarnished reputations for selling and collecting money but not being able to provide the goods. Sometimes Karma is a b—-.

It amazes me how many pepole come to the defense of this woman. I know quite a few kids and parents that this woman treated like crap, and acted as if they were a bother to her. It was like her guidance counselor job was second to her cheerleading coach job, and that is not good for the students you are supposed to be helping.

The “she made a mistake” argument is crap. This is not something that was done one time, there are multiple indictments, which means that she stole the money over a period of time. If she knew she was making a mistake, she could have stopped and returned what she had stolen so far. She did not do this, instead, she decided to keep stealing. That is not a mistake, that is a criminal, and a thief doing that a criminal and thief does.

I also think she had a double standard for people. If she thought you had money, I’m sure you got the royal treatment. Most scam artists) and that’s what she is if she did this) are so nice and loving to your face because that is how they win your trust and take advantage of you. Just because someone is nice and dresses well and acts a certain way in public does not mean they don’t have a demon of greed inside and will take advantage of people to get what they want. My daughter’s future was greatly affected by Harrell not sending her transcripts to her college. I thought I was the only one until I read these posts. Shame on her. I hope she gets what she deserves. I wonder if they will put PCHS on her Orange Suit.

Ted Bundy was attractive, well spoken and worked at a rape-counseling phone line while on his murder spree.

I am curious what she was spending this large amount of money on. Was she taking big vacations? drugs? new cars? Anyone know?

Let me point out first off if you do not like the county we live in or the school system we have please do us all the favor and pack your stuff and find somewhere else to go. It does not matter if your here or where EVERYWHERE has there own problems. Do not sit and bash the county and such, just leave. Angie does NOT reflect the entire school system. I personally got a great education at pulaski and enjoyed it. Second off, no matter if she did it or she didn’t we are not here to judge her life. No sin is smaller than another and we all have our own faults and we all sin. But only God is ment to judge! Not us!

First off Shirley Brown its not a dumB statement. *spell correctly before questioning someone else’s statements.* Second, if you go wise up and read you bible it states that no sin is smaller than another, and that GOD is who will judge us. But none the less the Judicial system is there to put a criminal in there place but as far as I can tell you are not a part of that. So until then sit back and let the experts do there job.

Before you start correcting people maybe you need to think how stupid you sound! “Ahhh 07christiangrad, those who live in glass houses…must be that superior pc education shining through.” I do have a good education with PC. If you don’t have education with PC then why are your even commenting here! This has nothing to do with you if you yourself have not gone to the school or your child is not going to the school. Never the less if your child is going to the school and you think that little of the school system please do the favor and LEAVE! because people like you are why Pulaski has a bad name! thank you!

I remember -come college application time – Angie would show preferential treatment for the cheerleaders and forget anyone else with aspirations. Too many futures rest in the hands of a guidance counselor. You need someone who tries to give kids opportunities, not ignore them and pocket their fundraising money. Well if anyone wanted to be a guidance counselor, she’s finally created one opportunity.

Angie Harrell is a PERFECT example of Karma. She has been so rude, mean, and disrespectful her whole time at PCHS. If you are a guidence counselor you do not pick and choose which children you want to help and not want to help. Boys and girls have lost opportunities to go to college and better themselves because she didn’t “feel” like sending their transcripts. Cheerleaders are pushed so hard to sell all of this stuff and raise all of this money and now we all see why. I know of a girl who was a cheerleader all through high school and then didn’t make it her senior year because she didn’t raise enough money. How is that right? For those who say “she has baby”, I call bs!!! There are plenty of teachers at the high school who have children and have not stole out of the clubs that they’re over. I feel empathy towards her family and her child but no one put a gun to her head and made her take that much money. She was way too comfortable taking out $50,000 so it’s hard to tell how much money she’s really taken through-out the years. PCHS should be ashamed they have allowed this to go on. But as Fedup said, if you complain then you are labeled as a problem parent and which causes problems for your children. Given there are lots of great teachers at the high school and those are the ones who should be in charge. That school would run alot more smoothly. Say what you want but Angie Harrell better serve time for taking that amount of money, she knew what she did was wrong and should have to pay back every single penny she has taken. Time to sell the BMW and all of your high priced things. If you had let go of the lifestyle you perceived yourself to have maybe you wouldn’t have put yourself in this situation to begin with :)

how on earth did a cheerleading squad amass $50,000+ ??? does the Board of Education require annual audits of such accounts ? what about profits from sales from vending machines and cafeterias in the schools — does anyone oversee them ? many times, principals, coaches, and other school administrators as well as parent organizations collect gobs of money without any accountability. it will be interesting to follow the Board’s actions on this situation and read public accounts of your newspaper’s investigative reporting in The Southwest Times.

@jim east The school system just started these and I would speculate this is why she got caught. This has been going on for years, many parents spoke to me about it over time. They were scared to come forward because of retaliation. There is not one accusation on here that I did not hear from multiple people over the last decade. Unsent transcripts, heard that several times, uniforms paid for and not received, heard that, accusations towards other staff and students that they had stolen funds, heard that as well. Bottom line karma is a bitch, but our school system has had piss poor leadership up until the last few years. Things are looking up and this is actually a good sign.

Vending machines in cafe are maintained and stoked thru school nutrition program. Now, the sports booster clubs have no accountability to the school division. There is the problem. All monies taken in by schools cafe, clubs, class sponsored fundraising does have a check& balances. So,do not condem pchs school for this mistake.
The checks & balances consist of each person taking in money writes a carbon copy receipt ,gives to person giving the money . All money has to be turned in daily to school bookkeeper. The bookkeeper’s accounting books checked each yr by pchs finance director and by state of va DOE. If a teacher or any other staff member needs any supplies , a purchase order must be obtained before ordering . These steps consist 1. Get price quote from a pre-approved vendor list. 2. Submit order quote to department head. 3. Then sent to principal to get approval . 4. Then if approved by the principal , then the staff member can order the supplies. . So you can see that PCHS that has a system of accountability .

I do not usually comment on these kinds of things.. Why? Because I have done things in my life I am not particularly proud of. My thoughts are this: We live in a small town where everyone is in everyones business, looking for the latest gossip and jumping at the chance to judge someone else. I’m sorry for the famlies this effected and for the girls who worked so hard to raise money for their sport and for the kids scholarships that this effected. The bottom line is that the people who are convicting angie are no better than her. she may have stonlen money, but judging is just as much a sin as stealing. Angie is living in her own humiliation right now with her name and face plasterd on the news and the local papers… Let the court system take care of her and the Good Lord above.

I was just curious if some of the students she failed to send transcripts for that did not get into college had scholarships.I know several that had to have their parents go to the school and force her to give them the transcripts they never got.Maybe the cheerleaders and their parents should all get together and take her to Court for all the items they bought and never received.Make her sell the BMW and other expensive items to help pay some of the money back. She got caught and they should not go easy on her.She treated many students bad.

Ms. Harrel is one of the nicest and most dedicated people that I’ve ever met. She would never do this!!! If any of you “people” actually knew her you would know this. Yeah how many of you people on here talking crap about her are christian? You don’t sound very christian when you sit here and talk crap about someone you dont even know. The bible even says “Do not speak evil against one another. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.” James 4:11. Ms. Harrell was and still is a good person which apparently none of you are.

It’s not Christian to steal either. It’s clear to me she was stealing, how could anyone have the lifestyle she had on a teacher’s salary? You must be one of the lucky ones she was sucking up to. From the comments she certainly wasn’t a nice person.

Thank you! If you look up the page at my comment I leaned on to the bible also. I am glad that im not the only one that still turns to faith for my answers. i graduated in 2007 and im sure you are still in school but you go! Use your faith! Regardless of if she did it or not. its not our place to sit and judge her. She could be hard to get along with at times. But when i was in school she went with my fashion class on a field trip and she was a amazing lady. But thank you for showing your faith!

david, you are never going to separate the Sunday-Christians from their Bible. Just rem. sitting in church on Sunday doesn’t make you a Christian any more than sitting in a garage makes you a car.

The bible suggests to judge is fine so long as you are not a hypocrite. John 7:24. You may judge a thief if you, yourself, are not one also.

what is with the religion people? this has nothing to do with religion….its the law…geez…she took 50k (which is ALOT of money) if she is found guilty then great! She doesn’t need to be forgiven so soon…the people who lost their money I’m sure could easily disagree with you….they didn’t arrest because they were bored…its called evidence…so lets leave the bible out of this…
