Accused of embezzling more than $50,000 from cheerleading program

Pulaski County High School Guidance Counselor Angelia Paige Harrell was arrested Monday evening on three felony counts of embezzlement, according to police.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Michael Conroy said Harrell was served with the three indictments and voluntarily surrendered herself to authorities. She was released on bond.

According to Conroy, Harrell is alleged to have diverted funds from Pulaski County School System, but more specifically from funds set aside for the cheerleading program. Harrell was a head coach of the varsity cheerleading squad.

The code section under which Harrell is charged deals with the diversion of public funds by a public employee. The charges are Class 4 felonies, each of which carries a possible sentence of two to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $100,000.

The alleged embezzlements occurred between March 2010 and Oct. 2011, said Conroy.

Pulaski County Schools Superintendent Tom Brewster declined to comment on the situation Monday or on the status of Harrell’s employment due to it being a personnel matter.

Why in the heck does a cheerleading program need 50K anyway? That’s ridiculous

50,000 dollars for a cheerleading club. Uniforms aren’t that much and parents pay most of it. This money could be used for scholarships and for building repair…and you wanna keep raising taxes for monies for these schools????

I see where Ms. Harrell’s case has been continued, for at least a 3rd time, to April 25th. Sounds like a deal might be in the works to me.

Agree….she will get a slap on the wrist, depending on who she knows, 5 years probation and some community service.

Since no one in the school system will make a comment on this matter, I wonder if she is still being carried on the payroll and collecting a salary????????????

I talked to a friend in the school system today and found out she is still being carried on the payroll and collecting a salary. Why has her Court Dates been postponed so many times and for so long?Somebody told me they were paying her because she is innocent until proven guilty. This should have already been tried in Court but it is hush hush.So Taxpayers yes we are still paying for her salary. Will there ever be a day she goes to Court ? While they are putting it off she still gets paid ?

Of course, the good ole boys club at PC are going to take care of their own. They’ll probably bring her back to work after she gets her slap on wrist.

The court keeps continuing the case most likely to give her time to pay back the funds she ALLEGEDLY stole. This will allow the court to avoid finding her guilty of a felony, no harm no foul so to speak. By my count, and I’m counting, the case has been continued 4 times… ahhh the privleges of some while others are thrown in jail without the same opportunity.

Can someone please explain to me how this persons case has been allowed to now be continued until August?!? She was arrested in October, what is the reason for the delay? Oh yeah, she’s being given time to pay back the funds, isn’t that right Mr. Commonwealths Attorney? Would everyone be given almost a year to make it right before going to trial? I think not! Nice justice system you have there PC.

I cannot believe another 4 months before this trial and she is still getting paid.Almost a year and not one time in Court. What are the reasons for the delays? What is this ?Isn’t this the 5th trial date ?Something is not right about this and if guilty I hope there is more than a slap on the wrist. If you do the crime you should do the time no matter who you are.

I find it amazing that she still collects salary after all that has happened.
