BLACKSBURG – A “suspicious package” found at Virginia Tech Friday evening shut down a portion of the campus, but was determined to be of no threat.
According to a university press release, Blacksburg Police Department received a report just before 7 p.m. that a suspicious package had been left near the Torgersen Hall Bridge on Alumni Drive.
Blacksburg authorities notified Virginia Tech Police Department and both agencies responded to the scene to secure the area. Alumni Mall was closed to vehicular traffic during the investigation.
The Virginia State Police bomb squad arrived on the scene shortly after 9 p.m. and determined the package was of no threat. The scene was cleared and normal activity resumed about 30 minutes later.
Although the package was found to be harmless, campus police reminded citizens to always be aware of their surroundings and trust their instincts if they come across a suspicious situation.
For safety purposes, any suspicious packages or objects should be reported to local law enforcement authorities.
