Betty Austin Hurst

Betty Austin Hurst of Christiansburg passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, with her family and hospice care by her side.

She was 85 years of age, and was born on May 20, 1927 in Radford. She graduated from Radford High School in 1944. Betty and her husband, Richard, were owners and operators of the Hurst Store in Dublin for over 37 years.

She is preceded in death by her sister, Peggy Hubble, of Radford.

She is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Wade Richard Hurst; three children, Priscilla Lilly and husband, Robert, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Rick Hurst and wife, Gail, of Radford, and Vicky Pennington and husband, Bobby, of Chesterfield; brother and sister, Doug Austin and wife, Sylvia, of Radford, and Catherine Clark and husband, Jimmy, of Radford; nine grandchildren, Tim Lilly, Richie Hurst (Amanda), Robbie Hurst (Margaret), Misty Walke (Mark), John Lilly (Danna), Christy Lynn, Brady Hurst (Becca), Betty Ann Byrd, and Brian Pennington (Natalie); 15 great grandchildren; Josh Byrd, Matthew Lynn, Zacchary Lynn, Justin Lefferts, Tori Estes, Blair Hurst, Abby Dillon, Grace Hurst, Alexa Lilly, Austin Eastwood, Kacy Lilly, Dylan Hurst, Sydney Edwards, Easton Pennington and Addison Pennington, along with may nieces and nephews.

The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to their many close friends, neighbors and extended family for all of their care and support over the last few months, with a special thank you for her caregivers, June Blake, Roberta Rollyson, Manacca Childress, and hospice nurses Mary and Debra.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Aug. 19, 3 p.m., at Dublin United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jo Hetherington and the Rev. Richard Patterson officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends on Sunday at the church from 2 until 3 p.m. service time.
