RADFORD – Herbert Daniel Sayers Sr., 89, left his life on Thursday, July 19, 2012.
He had lived in Radford since 1943. He was a member of First Christian Church from 1950 until 2012, when he became a charter member of Unity Christian Church, having transferred his membership from the Christian Church in Delton.
He worked for Hercules and other businesses in Radford before having his own home improvement business, where he patented the Easy Dump Gutter.
He loved nature and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a master woodworker and enjoyed whittling many prize-winning objects. He used a cane that he made himself.
He participated in many sports growing up and continued to participate in the Senior Olympics in recent years. He was a 1942 graduate of Draper High School and attended NRCC when it was a technical school. He was a U. S. Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Iris Webb Sayers; his parents, Benton and Georgia Sayers; brothers, Charles, Phil and Garland Sayers, and his sister, Evelyn Faulkner.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Herbert Daniel “Bucky” Sayers Jr. of Houston, Texas and his wife, Barbara, and Gary Michael Sayers of Claytor Lake and his fiancée, Kathy Waddell; one daughter, Judy Renee Campbell of Manassas and her husband, Gary; six grandchildren, Denice Burch, Bert Sayers, Shannon Sayers, Michael Sayers, Zachary Campbell and Magun Campbell; four great grandsons Peyton Sayers, Bryton Sayers, Davis Burch and Thomas Burch; two great-granddaughters, Kate Burch and Trinity Campbell, and two brothers and sisters-in-law, John Elton and Catherine Sayers of Staunton, and Edwin “Sandy” Sayers of Pulaski.
Funeral services will be Friday, July 27, 11 a.m. at Mullins Funeral Home in Radford, with the Rev. Gina Rhea officiating. Interment will follow in Webb Cemetery in Allisonia, where members of VFW Post 776 will conduct military graveside rites. The family will receive friends Thursday, 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home.
