The identity of a 20-year-old man who drowned while swimming at the beach area at Claytor Lake State Park Monday will not be released.

According to Gary Waugh, public relations manager for the state park, officials will honor the wishes of the victim’s family not to release the swimmer’s name.

The Hispanic male was swimming with another person when a park lifeguard noticed they appeared to be in distress.

The lifeguard was able to save one of the swimmers, but the other one disappeared below the water before the lifeguard could return. The victim was submerged about 10 minutes before he could be located in a grid search.

Attempts to revive him with CPR were not successful.
