BLAND– Fort Chiswell came out smoking and defeated the Bland Bears, 70-53 Friday. Senior Cory Mabry scored 13 of the Pioneers’ 21 first quarter points and finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds and five steals for the game. Mabry, 6-6, had help as fellow 6-5 senior Corey Gravely contributed 16 points, six boards and three assists. He had two dunks and has committed to UVA-WISE to play football. Two other Pioneers also had double figures, Nathaniel Worrell had 11 points, five steals and three assists. Daniel Hamm finished with 10 points and three assists. Sophomore Coleman Thomas, 6-6, came off the Fort Chiswell bench and chipped in with nine points and nine rebounds. Bland was lead by Chase Hankins with 19 points and Asher Dillow’s 16. “Our plan was to go inside tonight and we did that pretty well,” said Fort Chiswell head coach Derrick Jackson. The Pioneers outscored the Bears, 21-4 in the opening period and never relinquished the lead. The closest the Bears got was 38-33 at the sixminute mark of the third quarter, but the Pioneers made another run, outscoring Bland 17-6 to take a 55-39 advantage heading into the final quarter. Fort Chiswell is now 17-5, finished 8-2 in the Mountain Empire District and will be seeded second in the upcoming district tournament. Bland finished at 11-11 and 2-8. “We lost a little focus early in the third quarter, but we finished the second half and we stepped up,” said coach Jackson. The Pioneers will play the winner of the Grayson Co.-Narrows game either Tuesday or Wednesday at Graham, in the the district semi-final. The Pioneers split with Grayson during the regular season with each team winning on the other’s home court.
