HONOLULU, Hawaii – Jason and Paige Pratt of Smyth County were named runners-up for the 2012 American Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmers & Ranchers Excellence in Agriculture Award.
The presentation was made Jan. 9 at the AFBF annual convention held in Hawaii. Jason Pratt is an agriculture agent for Virginia Cooperative Extension, based in Pulaski County, and also works on his family’s Smyth County farm.
Paige Pratt is an Extension specialist at Virginia Tech and oversees youth livestock programs across the state.
The award is presented to young farmers and ranchers who do not derive the majority of their income from an agricultural operation. However, it recognizes those who actively contribute to agriculture through growing crops and participating in Farm Bureau and other organizations.
This past fall, the couple won the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation’s Young Farmers Excellence in Agriculture Award.
For being named runners-up in the American Farm Bureau Federation competition, the Pratts received a Case IH Farmall 45A tractor, courtesy of Case IH, and a $5,000 savings bond and a Stihl Farm Boss chainsaw, courtesy of Stihl.
