NRCC grad elected to House of Delegates

A New River Community College graduate was elected in November to the Virginia House of Delegates representing 93rd District constituents in the Williamsburg area.

Michael Watson graduated from NRCC’s instrumentation technology program in 1983 and went on to become the president and CEO of Control Automation Technologies Corp.

According to its website, Control Automation Technologies Corp., or CATLabTM, provides repair and calibration services for various equipment used by technicians. Its administrative offices are located in Williamsburg and it has laboratories in Providence Forge and Winston-Salem, N.C.

Watson has been a member of NRCC’s Educational Foundation board since September 2010.

According to the corporate website, he has supported the Educational Foundation and college through donations, guest speaking and employment of over 20 NRCC graduates.

Control Automation also has served as a principal sponsor of the Billy E. Friend Endowed Scholarship, which provides an annual scholarship of $1,000 to qualified students entering the field of instrumentation and control automation.

The late Billy E. Friend was instructor of instrumentation at NRCC for a number of years, taking the program to international status.
