Dublin Fire Department to mark milestone

It’s going to be a busy year for Dublin Volunteer Fire Department, but not because it anticipates any increase in fire calls.

What will keep the department so busy is planning activities to mark its 100th anniversary.

It’ll probably be the busiest year we’ve ever had,” said Fire Chief Ronnie McClure, noting several special events are already in the works.

One of the biggest activities geared toward recognizing the department’s years of service to the community will be a free Community Celebration and Concert slated for Randolph Park Saturday, May 12, beginning at 1 p.m.

Besides having fire trucks and equipment on display for the community to view, the event also will include a display of classic fire trucks and cars and a visit by one of the Lifeguard medical helicopters at 4 p.m.

The department will demonstrate how to extricate a person from a vehicle at 3 p.m.

Food catered by Texas Road House will be served at 4:30 p.m. and be available while supplies last.

A concert will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The public is invited to bring a chain and enjoy an afternoon of family fun.

Donations for the volunteer department will be accepted during the event.

In June, McClure said the department will host the firefighters convention and on Oct. 6, an open house will be held at the department, on Trinkle Avenue.

The Old Dominion Historical Fire Society will have a display of antique fire trucks at the open house and other fire departments from the region will be on hand, as well.

McClure said the department would like to hold a parade, similar to the Pulaski Fire Prevention Parade, in downtown Dublin the day of the open house.

Other activities the department will be involved in this year include working with the county on obtaining a new fire engine for the department and being on standby at the New River Valley SkyFest AirShow to be held at New River Valley Airport Sept. 7-9.

That’s all in addition to our normal activities,” McClure said.

The department personnel participated in 2,074 hours of training during 2011.
