WYTHEVILLE – Tied 7-7 with four seconds remaining, George Wythe’s placekicker Mikel Hawkes calmly came out onto the gridiron and kicked a 25 yard field goal for the game winner and sent the Bobcat faithful home with a lousy and losing feeling. “
The maroons with the win improved to 3-0 and the Bobcats fell to 1-1.
There were a lot of three and outs on both sides tonight, “ said a dejected Radford head coach Matthew Saunders.
Radford played very good defense and was impressive as was George Wythe. Coach Saunders then remarked, “We did play pretty well defensively, but we must improve on the offensive side. George Wythe is real good on defense, so don’t take anything away from them.”
The Maroons won most of the stats in the game, they has 13 first downs, to Radfords five. They also ran 20 more plays in the contest against Radford. George Wythe rushed for around 190 yards and held the Bobcats to below 70.
Running back Hunter Griffitts had the only Radford score, when he raced 45 yards for a first quarter score. Don’t be surprised if both teams are playing in late November, in the new playoff format.
Radford takes to the road again this Friday as they go to Galax. The Maroon Tide are undefeated 3-0.
