Fort Chiswell drops season opener

Rural Retreat– Fort Chiswell s traveled to Rural Retreat and came up short on the score board, 28-22. They took their only lead of the game with 6:15 to go in the game, as Trey Jackson ran in from five yards out and then quarterback Corey Mabry ran a quarterback keeper for a two point conversion up the middle to put the Pioneers up 22-21.
On the next possession Rural Retreat would drive down to the Fort Chiswell 22 yard line. On fourth down and seven the Indians quarterback Zayne Williams dropped back and threw a pass to Travis Foster that was over his head and it fell incomplete.
The only problem was a yellow flag was thrown and the Pioneers were called for pass interference. On the next play Williams then threw a pass to Tanner Hayes as he broke a couple of tackles to score a touchdown, to put the Indians up, 28-22 with just 59 seconds remaining in the game,
Fort Chiswell after two pass completions were up to their own 45 yard line following the kickoff. Then Mabry rolled out to his right and threw to Mackenzie Mabe who had gotten behind all the Rural Retreat defenders, but the football was dropped and then on the next play, the Indians Tyler Caudill intercepted the pass at the Rural Retreat 32 yard line with just 28 seconds remaining. Rural Retreat controlled most of the ball game as they rushed the ball 52 times for 217 yards. They had 269 yards of total offense to Fort Chiswell’s 175.
Rural Retreat got on the scoreboard first when Lukas Langston bulled his way in from four yards out and Ryan Lyall split the uprights to make it 7-0. Fort Chiswell then tied the game with 10:59 before halftime, when Desmond Perry scooped up a fumble and took it 48 yards and Zane Gregory made the PAT.
Rural Retreat scored with 6:32 remaining as Langston scored on a five yard run and then Caudill with 1:03 before the half ran into the end zone to put the Indians up, 21-7. Fort Chiswell cut the lead to, 21-14 when Mackenzie Mabe caught a two yard pass from Mabry with all zero’s showing on the clock.
The Indians QB Zane Williams rushed for 76 yards and threw for 52. Langston finished with 55 yards on 12 carries with two touch downs. Caudill had 52 yards on 14 carries and one touchdown.
For the losing Pioneers Ray Rodriguez finished with 81 yards on 15 carries. QB Corey Mabry had eight carries for 12 yards and was six6 of 11 passing, with one touch down, two interceptions and 82 yards passing.
Fort Chiswell head coach Stephen James said, “We didn’t make plays and we had to many mental mistakes. We had an opportunity to win the game, we just didn’t get it done. We need to be coached better.”

Fort Chiswell will play their home opener next Friday against their arch rivals George Wythe Maroons.
