A Pulaski County woman says she would like to see an American flag placed in the new section of Oakwood Cemetery, even if it means she has to personally raise the money to buy it.
Barbara Smith pointed out to Pulaski Town Council Tuesday that the older section of the cemetery has a flag pole and flag, while the new part does not. She said she will go out and personally raise the funds to buy a pole and flag for the new section if the town isn’t willing to buy one because a lot of veterans are being buried in the new section, including her husband.
She thanked council for the job town crews do keeping the cemetery clean and maintained. However, she expressed concern that small flags she keeps placing in a vase on her husband’s grave are being removed. She asked if the town could wait until after Labor Day to “remove the flag my husband fought for.”
Mayor Jeff Worrell said he isn’t sure why the flags are being removed since they aren’t in an area that would interfere with mowing. He suggested vandals are removing the flags or wind is blowing them out.
