BLAND COUNTY – A truck sought by police in a Sunday hit-and-run on Interstate 77 was recovered Tuesday in Bland County.
Virginia State Police Trooper B.R. Edwards located the 1999 Chevrolet S-10 pickup abandoned and disabled near the top of Little Walker Mountain just before 4 p.m. The truck had struck a large pole and tree.
Edwards determined the truck belonged to hit-and-run suspect George E. Sparkman, 55, of Max Meadows.
Police apprehended Sparkman Monday for allegedly injuring seven people by swerving into and hitting six motorcycles near Exit 47, then fleeing the scene of the wrecks.
Sparkman was found about four hours later at an Exit 41 truck stop. The truck was not in Sparkman’s possession at that time.
The suspect is charged with three counts of malicious wounding, four counts of attempted malicious wounding, one count of hit-and-run and one count of reckless driving. Alcohol allegedly was a factor in the incident, which resulted in one biker being airlifted to a hospital.
