Myrtle Irene Duncan Columbus, 81 of Knoxville, TN and formerly of Pulaski, VA, died Friday February 19, 2010 in Parkwest Hospital in Knoxville.
She was born July 17, 1928 in Lynchburg, and was the daughter of the late Tressie Coleman Duncan and Robert Franklin Duncan. She was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Pulaski, a past member of the Hoe and Hope Garden Club, a former Sunday School teacher for First Baptist Church, and was a member of the Wednesday Bridge Club. She was an accomplished poet, and had received the “Anthology Poet Award” in 1986.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Columbus, Sr., and a sister, Shirley Hobbs. She is survived by two sons: John A. Columbus, Jr. and his wife Deborah of Charlotte, NC, and Craig Franklin Columbus and his wife Carly of New Zealand: two daughters, Lisa Beeler and her husband Bill of Knoxville, TN, and Jill Paleos and her husband Steve of Frederick, MD: three sisters, Elizabeth Snell and her husband Richard, Doris Moseley and her husband Terrell, and Phyllis Thomasson and her husband Bill all of Lynchburg. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, and a number of special nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday February 22, 2010 at 12 Noon at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Hugh Kilgore officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. The family will receive friends Monday morning from 10:00 a.m. until 12 Noon at the church.
