Deputy on leave after fatal shooting

A man is dead and a Montgomery County deputy is on leave following a fatal shooting off Ellett Road Wednesday night.
According to Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began when deputies were assisting Christiansburg Police Department with a vehicle pursuit just before 9 p.m. Wednesday. The pursuit entered Montgomery County, where the suspect vehicle collided with another vehicle and came to rest in a ditch on Ellet Road.
“When deputies and officers approached the vehicle, the driver warned them to stay away and made threats toward a two-year-old passenger,” a sheriff’s department press release states. “The driver then attempted to back into the (police officers) and was shot by a deputy …”
The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, but there were no other serious injuries.
The name of the driver is not being withheld pending notification of family.
The identity of the deputy also is being withheld. The deputy is on paid admininstrative leave while the case is investigated by Virginia State Police.
