First snowfall blankets area

Pulaski County residents awoke to the first snowfall of the season Saturday morning, as a wet, slushy snow began to blanket the ground just before sunrise.
For the most part, main roads stayed pretty clear. Areas less traveled took on a light coating and by noon snowplows were out clearing the slushy buildup in an effort to prevent accidents.
Virginia State Police were reporting few accidents in Pulaski County. “We’ve not had anything much all day in Pulaski County,” a dispatcher in the Wytheville headquarters reported. “It’s been one of the better counties we’ve had.”
According to police scanner traffic, Montgomery County had the most reports of accidents on Interstate 81.
The snow prompted Pulaski County to cancel its Veterans Remembrance Ceremony scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Pulaski County Courthouse.
Pulaski Fire Marshal Chip Hutchinson said his department responded to a fire alarm at a church Saturday morning, but it turned out to be a false alarm.
