Verna Eloise (Elly) Bolen, 81, of St. Augustine, FL, passed away on December 14, 2009. She was born on July 4, 1928 in Mullens, WVA to the late Lewis G. Bolen and Ora Brammer Bolen. Ms. Bolen was retired as a language arts and fine arts teacher from the South Carolina and Florida Schools for the Deaf. She attended Mullens High School, Concord College and graduated from Gallaudet University in 1955. She was co-founder and alumnus of Delta Epsilon Sorority and the sorority’s first president while at Gallaudet University in 1953. She was awarded Who’s Who of College Students while at Gallaudet University. She was a fifty-five year member of the Mullens Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a member and former president of the First Coast Optimist Club. She also volunteered at the Gallaudet University Regional Center at Flagler College in St. Augustine.
She enjoyed traveling and had the opportunity to tour Italy, Spain, Holland, Germany and France with college friends several years back.
She is survived by her daughter, Jodi Tiberio Stanch (Jeff); Grandchildren, Chelsea Nicole and Zachary Samuel Stanch all of Jacksonville, FL. "Gappa" would light up each time she saw her grandchildren, as they were so precious to her.
Additional survivors include her brother, Gerald Bolen (Lois); sister-in-law, Mildred Bolen all of Pulaski, VA, several nieces, nephew, cousins and numerous friends. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers, L.G. Bolen, Jr., and John T. Bolen.
Reverend David Schokes will be officiating at a memorial service to be held December 18, 2009 at Craig Funeral Home, 1475 Old Dixie Hwy., at 2:00 pm in St. Augustine.
