Local candidates to square off at NRCC

The public is invited to come out to the 2009 Candidates Forum this Wednesday, Oct. 7 at New River Community College.
The forum, sponsored by The Southwest Times and Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce, will give area residents an opportunity to submit questions to be asked of the candidates and to learn more about those seeking office.
The event will be held 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Edwards Hall.
Candidates taking part in the forum include incumbent Sixth District Del. Anne B. Crockett-Stark (R-Wytheville) and her opponent, Democrat Carole Pratt; and incumbent Seventh District Del. Dave Nutter (R-Christiansburg) and his opponent, Democrat Peggy Frank.
““This is one of the most meaningful events in the Chamber’s Program of Work,” said Chamber Executive Director Peggy White. “Prior to each election, we like to give our citizens the opportunity to hear more from their candidates than just sound bites and ads. We feel that it is important to give the voters an opportunity to meet the candidates, ask questions about issues of special concern to them, and, perhaps, talk with the candidates personally after the Forum.
“Both sponsors of this event, the Chamber and The Southwest Times, believe that it is important for people to exercise their right and privilege to vote, and that each voter should be as well-informed as possible. All the citizens of the area are encouraged to come out for this event, learn about the issues directly from the candidates, then go to the polls and vote on Nov. 3.”
Southwest Times Publisher Jim Perry said, “We’re pleased to provide a platform for the candidates and the voting public to interact for this important election. I want everybody to be an informed voter on Nov. 3.”
For more information, call the Chamber office at 674-1991 or e-mail pcchamber@swva.net.
