Melvin Artis DeBerry

Mr. Melvin Artis DeBerry quietly passed away on Tuesday October, 20, 2009 surrounded by his family.
Melvin was born on January 26, 1930 in Lowe, West Virginia to the late Caleb and Cornelia Kennedy DeBerry.
He attended Gray District High School in Gary West Virginia where he was an outstanding athlete in football.
Melvin worked in the coal mines of Jenkinjones, West Virginia until he was called, by his country to serve in the Korean Conflict. After becoming an honorable veteran, Melvin relocated to New York City. He worked for many years at Nelkin, where he met and married the late Doris Elizabeth Lemmons. Melvin was working for the New York City Transit Authority when he decided to bring his family to Pulaski, Virginia.
Melvin was a member of Randolph Avenue United Methodist Church for many years. He was a retired employee of Magnox Corporation, now Nano Chemonics in Pulaski, Virginia.
Melvin was a caring and loving father and friend. He was easy to share a smile and a story. He will be sorely missed.
In addition to his Wife and Parents, Melvin was preceded in death by his sisters; Montrolia Moore and Della Ve Jones; brothers, Ernest and Curtis DeBerry; brother-in-laws, O’evra Jones, Emmett T. Venable, Gregory Montana, James Davis, Leroy “Joe” and James ”Jimmy” Lemmons; sister –in-law ,Helen Lemmons; Mother-in-law, Agnes Talley Lemmons Montana and Father-in-law, William “Bill” Montana.
He leaves to remember him always his daughter Gail Antoinette DeBerry Gordon; son-in-law, Juan Alberto Gordon; Grandchildren, Jonathan Whitfield and Erika Elizabeth Gordon; two sisters, Hazel Hubbard and Marie Venable; sister –in-laws, Odean DeBerry, Ellen Davis, Christine “Pasty” Banks, Gail and Elease Lemmons; brother-in-laws, Algie Moore, Lewis Hubbard, Rufus Banks Sr. and Fredrick Lemmons.

A precious one from us is gone
A voice we love is still
A place is vacant in our home
That never can be filled.

Funeral Services will be conducted on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Randolph Avenue United Methodist Church, Pulaski, Virginia. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service.
Professional services entrusted to Penn’s Funeral Home, Pulaski, Virginia.
