Task force formed to find killer

As many as nine local, state and federal agencies are joining together to form a task force to investigate the August murders of two Virginia Tech students.
"Bringing the various agencies who have already contributed to the investigation of this crime into one centralized location and group just makes good sense,” said Montgomery County Sheriff Tommy Whitt.
A man walking a dog discovered the bodies of 19-year-old David Lee Metzler of Lynchburg and 18-year-old Heidi Lynn Childs of Forest at Caldwell Fields off Craig Creek Road just after 8 a.m. Aug. 27. Metzler’s body was found inside his car and Childs’ body was lying outside the car. Both had been shot and were dead when police arrived on the scene.
Besides Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, other agencies joining the task force include the police departments from Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Virginia Tech; Virginia State Police; Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF); the U.S. Marshall’s Office; and the U.S. Forest Service.
The sheriff’s office also has issued an appeal to the publid for information to help solve the double homicide.
Anyone who was in the area of Caldwell Fields or the Jefferson National Forest Shooting Range on Craig Creek Road between 8 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26 and 8 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 27 should call 540-382-2951.
Metzler was a sophomore in industrial and systems engineering and Childs was a sophomore in biochemistry. Both lived off campus.
