Fire heavily damages Pulaski home

A kitchen fire apparently sparked a fire that heavily damaged a Pulaski residence late Saturday.
Pulaski Fire Marshal Chip Hutchinson said fire was coming out of the windows and roof of the wood frame structure at 195 Oak Lane when firefighters arrived on the scene around 10:25 p.m. Oak Lane is off Dora Highway.
Hutchinson said the owner of the house, Linda Crowder, and her husband were sleeping when the fire broke out. He noted that although the house apparently did not have smoke alarms, the couple awakened and were able to get out of the house unharmed.
Asked whether the couple was awakened by smoke, the fire marshal said, “it wasn’t the smoke. Smoke doesn’t wake you, it kills you.” He said he doesn’t know what awakened them.
According to Hutchinson, the husband indicated he had been cooking before going to bed, so the stove apparently was left on.
Six pieces of fire equipment from Pulaski Fire Department and 30 firefighters responded to the blaze. They were on the scene until just after midnight.
In addition to the fire department, Pulaski Police Department and REMSI (Regional Emergency Medical Services Inc.) responded to the scene.
