Johnny Mitchell (Mickey) Russell, age 60 of Yorktown, VA and formerly Richmond passed away Saturday, July 11, 2009 in the Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News, Virginia.
Born April 2, 1949 in Pulaski, he is the son of the Jeannette Geraldine (Jerry) Shelton Russell and the late Joseph William Russell, Sr. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by Grandparents, Rev. Johnny Elmer and Lummie Shelton, and father-in-law, Lawrence E. Wooldridge. Mr. Russell opened Pro Am Golf Company, a golf company specializing in custom fitted golf clubs in 1994 in Yorktown. He has been recognized by the Professional Golf Club Maker’s Society and K2 Golf (a leading golf club manufacturer) as one of the industries top club fitters and club maker. Mr. Russell enjoyed working with PGA professionals and amateurs alike.
Prior to his career in the golf industry, Mr. Russell was a professional musician. His career included both live and studio work.
He is survived by his wife Nancy Wooldridge Russell-Yorktown, VA; Mother, Jeannette Geraldine (Jerry) Shelton Russell-Christiansburg; Brother, Joseph W. Russell, Jr. & wife, Coates Russell-Las Vegas, Nevada; Mother-in-law Joyce Mae Wooldridge; Brother-in-law Larry R. Wooldridge, both of Catonsville, MD.
Funeral services will be held Thursday 2:00 p.m. in the Bower Funeral Home Chapel, Pulaski with Rev. Joseph W. Russell, Jr., Rev. J.B. Shelton and Rev. Leslie Shelton officiating. Interment will follow in the Drapers Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery, Wythe County.The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bower Funeral Home, 1631 Bob White Blvd., Pulaski.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial may be sent to the National Diabetes Association and the National Kidney Foundation.
