Town to kick off summer this weekend

The Town of Pulaski will officially kick off the summer season this weekend with several events being held in Jackson Park, in advance of the opening game of the Pulaski Mariners Tuesday night.
The events get underway Friday at 6:30 p.m. with the first performance in the annual Concert in the Park series. In addition to the Town of Pulaski, the event is sponsored by the Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley.
The featured band will be The Sound Express, a seven-piece band from North Carolina. The group plays a variety of music ranging from big band sounds to current dance hits, oldies and the best of Motown.
Saturday night, families can bring their kids to the park to watch the movie “Hotel for Dogs,” under the stars. The movie is part of the annual Movie in the Park series. It is rated PG and will be shown on a large “blow-up” screen at 9:15 p.m.
A lack of money will be no excuse for missing these two events, as both are free to the public. Those who plan to attend either or both events are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs for seating.
Friday and Saturday’s events will gear up the public for the 2009 Pulaski Mariners minor league baseball season opening game Tuesday. The game begins at 7 p.m. at Calfee Park.
The Mariners won the Appalachian League East Division Championship in 2008, the team’s debut year in Pulaski. They are slated to square off against the Danville Braves next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights.
The Mariners finished the season 40-27 in 2008, while the Braves were 35-32.
